Jim, I loved this post! You gave me a lot of ideas about other things I could be doing in self-publishing. Being in grad school forced me to write short stories for the first time and, while I found it difficult to keep the plot shorter, I've started to enjoy it. I like the idea of being able to play around more and then publish a volume of short works. Fun!

And you're sure right - this is definitely a business we're running! It's a challenge - but I love it! :)

Thanks again for joining us today!

Thanks, Shonna. Going for the traditional contract is an option, and the nice thing is you can still self-publish down the road if this does not work out as you wish. And the process you go through does help you get better as a writer. So go for it.

Speaking of A Greater Glory, I hope to have the whole series out on E later this year.

I like your strategy! First step for me is landing that traditional contract :) I think I'd be too easy on myself if I self-published first--stopping at "good enough" writing instead of going for "great." One day, though, I think it would be fun to have a hand in all the production aspects.

(FYI, my book club this month is reading your book A Greater Glory!)

Oh my gosh, Cat, this is an AWESOME post!! Thanks SO MUCH for joining us! Even just reading your post, I felt a sense of the magical! This is the sort of thing I thought I would explore in my MA in Creative Writing, but I was sadly disappointed. Before I even finished the degree, I started looking for storytelling classes to take as well. I know I can write more magically, it just hasn't come out on the page yet. If I can get to England and find out where you are performing, I am TOTALLY coming to see you! This is exciting all the electrons in my body! LOL! I have to go tell EVERYONE on Twitter and Facebook to come read this post! LOL!

Big Hugs!!!!
Kitty (who is going to go look for your books even though I don't have kids) :)

I've been reading your blog for a while now and someone recently passed the Versatile Blogger Award on to me. As a consequence I have to nominate some blogs I really like for the award too!

I'm nominating Routine For Writers because you're all so dedicated and your posts are honest and interesting. You can read more about it on my recent blog post (which includes a link to your blog) if you're willing to pass on the award to others:

Congrats, Stephanie! It must feel so great to have the whole world in front of you. I know what you mean about limited opportunities (not that I'd change my choices :). One thing I've always loved about writing is that you can do it no matter your life circumstances or your age. That encourages me to keep at it. I know I'm a writer for life.

Thanks Shonna! Revision does some times feel like a black hole. When I feel the black hole sucking me in, I remind myself that it's always easier to work with words on the page then to stare at a blank page. Pat yourself on the back that you have words to revise, grab the coffee and keep going.

"it was the beginning of a lot of rejection and a lot more hard work" This is where I'm at. I feel lost in the black hole of revision. However, I'm amazed at how much better a (my) book can get even after I thought I had already done the best I could do. Thanks for the encouraging words...that "the commonplace, the regular and the unvarying routine" leads to accomplishing dreams! And a big congratulations to you. I hope you have a great release day!
